Reading Center. Glòries, Barcelona
The project transforms a former industrial building on an Eixample block next to Plaça de les Glòries into a contemporary Reading Center, reactivating a disused structure from Barcelona’s industrial past. The intervention preserves the existing order of the building while redefining its relationship with light and public space.
Light is conceived as the main architectural material. Strategic cuts in the façade, roof, and slabs carve the volume to bring natural light deep into the interior, creating an atmosphere that encourages reading, learning, and reflection. External structural ribs frame these openings, acting as solar control elements and shaping the building’s new identity.
The program is organized around a central circulation core, with reading spaces unfolding vertically from daily and children’s areas to more contemplative zones and a top floor dedicated to cultural events and community activities. The project proposes a quiet, luminous interior that transforms the former factory into a contemporary space for knowledge and collective experience.
